The CPAP alternative: Snoring and Sleep Apnoea Devices
Dickson Street Dental provides mandibular advancement devices (MADs), a CPAP alternative, for the treatment of diagnosed obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and snoring.
Obstructive sleep apnoea is the condition where your throat partially or completely closes during sleep, causing you to stop breathing, and can lead to serious health issues (including heart disease and strokes).
A mandibular advancement splint or mandibular advancement device is an oral appliance similar to a mouth guard, used to keep your jaw (mandible) forward and your airways open while you sleep – allowing you to breathe better.
Typical signs of sleep apnoea may be snoring, choking or gasping in your sleep, daytime sleepiness and unrestful sleep. We would recommend a sleep study to confirm this, and this can be done at the comfort of your home, (through your local participating pharmacy) or in a laboratory setting – we can also refer and guide you through this process.
If you have been diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) or snoring, bring a copy of your sleep study results with you for a consult with one of our friendly dentists, who can aid you in choosing and fabricating an oral sleep device tailored to you in relation to the results of your sleep study.Â
Have a friends trip planned and don't want to lug around a heavy CPAP machine? A discreet snoring mouth guard may be the device for you.
Around one in four men over 30 years of age have some degree of OSA, making it more common than asthma
Although CPAP treatment is the first-line treatment for obstructive sleep apnoea, some difficulties with the CPAP machine, such as noisiness, skin dryness or mask leakage causes discomfort during sleep, and therefore poor compliance.
Mandibular advancement devices are an alternative to CPAP treatment, to open the oral airway and allow you to breathe in your sleep, as recommended by the Australian Sleep Association. In some cases, a dental sleep apnoea appliance is recommended together with a CPAP machine.
When deciding between CPAP and a MAD, the most effective treatment is the one you’re able and willing to use regularly.
Not all dentists are trained in dental sleep medicine or equipped to treat sleep disorders - the experienced team at Dickson Street Dental are well versed in sleep disordered breathing issues and can help guide you to improve your sleep through oral appliance therapy.Â
We offer a wide range of sleep devices, depending on your needs, however we primarily work with a local Australian lab in South Yarra to provide state of the art 3D printed devices for sleep apnoea and snoring. This new technology allows for a much thinner devices to be made, allowing for greater comfort during wear, and increased durability. These devices also allow for night time grinding, and can be adjusted for further jaw movement if necessary. We are also providers of SomnoMed appliances. Your dentist will help determine which is the best device for you.
If your diagnosis is just snoring (with no sleep apnoea), a MAD can still be fabricated for you to allow open airflow and reduce or completely eliminate loud snoring. It is recommended to have a sleep study to confirm this diagnosis of primary snoring if you are also having symptoms of poor sleep, such as daytime sleepiness. Snoring is typically the FIRST symptom to be alleviated with wearing a MAD.
Compliance is the major issue faced with CPAP treatment, and to a lesser degree, treatment with MADs. Most patients find that mandibular advancement appliances are much more comfortable than CPAP. Depending on your diagnosis, your dentist will find the best intersect between comfort and function for you - to tackle the underlying issue whilst still maximising the comfort of wear to you. This increases your chance of success but making sure it is as comfortable as possible, whilst also treating your breathing issues.
